Scrolling in Word2k causes freeze-up

I just upgraded from Office 97 to Office 2000 (SP-3, v.9.0.8968). Only Word
and Excel are installed. I'm running this on Win2000 fully patched, on a
Thinkpad w/ a Pentium Mobile processor and 2gb of memory.

The problem I'm having is that if I use the scroll feature in Word it cause
other open applications to freeze up, and I wind up having to back out with
task manager. I've even experienced not being able to move icons on the
desktop, or close programs from the taskbar, as a result of this. I don't
have to be actively scrolling - the problem occurs even with the scrolling
process completed.

I haven't been able to find anything on the Internet, which surprises me,
since tens of millions of people have used this program and the problem can'
t be all that rare.

Any help appreciated.

To clarify: by "scroll" I mean the scrolling that starts when you click the
mouse wheel and stops when you click it again. I have two settings in my
mouse program (called Browser Mouse): Intellimouse mode and Enhanced
Scrolling mode. The problem occurs in either mode.

O2k is a very different beast to O97, much as win9* is completely different
from win2k onwards

I checked the video drivers at the Lenovo site, and they are the latest, in
fact the final ones, for that video card. I suspect the problem may be due
to the fact that I'm displaying on a peripheral monitor, not the laptop
screen. My other Thinkpad, a different model but one which uses the same
video driver, has no attached monitor and doesn't exhibit the problem. I'll
try to check it out.
