Scrolling lag in one document

Gang,
I'm having a strange problem with a Word doc (I'm using v 11.3.5....but
I had the same problem in 11.3.0 before I updated).

When I first open the doc, everything seems to work fine. After a
short period of time (usually less than a minute or two), when I scroll
with the scroll ball (I have a basic Mighty Mouse), it begins to lag.
It scrolls moments after I roll the ball. In fact, many times it does
not scroll at all.

However!... if while it is frozen I click anywhere in the document or
even outside the doc in another window, desktop, etc,*then* the
document scrolls. In fact, if I roll the scroll ball around repeatedly
while it is frozen, then click anywhere, it then scrolls rapidly up,
down, up, down....basically catching up on all the movements I made
with the scroll ball.

Dragging the scroll bar with the mouse does not appear to present any
problems, just using the scroll ball.

Things to note:
--the scroll ball works fine in all my other apps that happen to be
open at the same time as this Word doc is doing its funny business
--my other Word docs are NOT having this same issue (except when this
one troublesome doc is also open, then it screws up all Word docs that
happen to be open concurrently.

So there appears to be some sort of corruption with this doc. It's
something of a mutt, having had parts of other docs created by other
people on other computers (probably all using Word for Windows) pasted
in to it. In fact, I ran the compatibility check and it said there was
Swedish text in it...I have no idea why, but I selected all, and set it
English (US) in the Tools>Language dialog. That didn't fix it, but it
did clear out the compatibility check.

I have also tried selecting all but the last paragraph mark, copying
and pasting it into a new doc (after closing the offending one). It
still did the same thing.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
_dennis

Is this a particularly large (in terms of file size, not number of
pages) document? I have found that large files cause the processor to
slow down, particularly if something else processor hungry is open at
the same time.

If it is large, there may be some image stuck in it that also copies
across when you do the all-but-last-paragraph-mark thing.

No, it's actually rather small (124k file size; 12 pages in length).

Lately I have spent more time working on a larger document (656k) that
contains a lot of images, text boxes, and endnotes with no problem
whatsoever. But when I open this other, smaller document, it always
picks a fight with my (not so Mighty) Mouse :)

Hi (I'm posting from a different computer, hence the different name)

I tried the HTML "wash" as instructed and it didn't fix my scrolling
woes. I also checked all the other goodies there (master doc, versions,
etc) and didn't find any of them active in my doc. If I have the time I
may try the "binary" test (cutting the doc in half to see if the problem
can be isolated to just one half, then cutting again, etc).

Oh well, hopefully this is isolated to just this doc and doesn't pop up
in any others, especially the larger one I've been working on most
frequently of late.
