scrolling mouse wheel distorts display

Hi!

I am using Windows XP SP-2, Office 2003 SP-1.
When I use the scroll wheel to scroll through a word document it often
causes severe distortions of the display. The display is destorted not only
within the active word window but throuout the system. It can not be fixed in
any other matter (such as restarting word, changing screen resolution...)
than restarting the system. Sometimes, the desktop icons stay distorted even
after rebooting! I have allready replaced the memmory chips and the graphics
card but the situation has not improved.
How can I get rid of the problem??

Try reducing the hardware acceleration setting in Start | Control Panel |
Display.

I have done that and without much testing it seems that only disabling all
acceleration removes the problem. How much performance do I lose this way??
What could be the source of this distortions?

Not sure why it's happening, but it seems to be related to Windows XP SP2.
It would seem that if turning off hardware acceleration fixes the problem,
then you're actually gaining performance.

Greetings--
Have you tried updating your display driver?
Adding memory banks to the graphic card?
Upgrading to a more powerful graphic card?

I have tried various hardware configuration changes and updated the driver.
It did not seem to have any effect.

The problem was allready present before updating to SP-1 and SP-2.
Don't I actually lose performance in other applications than Word when
disabling acceleration?

Greetings--
Then maybe you could try updating the mouse driver.
Also you could try using a different mouse if you have a spare mouse or can
borrow one for a while. See what happens then.

It can reduce your graphic performance if it is too low. Typically you
should see if there is an update for your graphics driver if you find
reducing hardware acceleration resolves the problem. If there isn't an
update then all you can really do is reduce the hardware acceleration
or I guess obtain an new video adapter.
