Scrolling problem in Word 2003 with touchpad

I have a weird scrolling problem in Word 2003. It always happen if I have a
document open with a couple of pages of text after just entered some words in
the document. When I then try to scroll with my touchpad, the scrolling sort
of hangs after been scrolling half a page or so. The scrolling hacks and the
page is flickering and goes up and down one centimeter or so very quickly.
The problem disappears for example by clicking the touchpad button whereever
in the document. Scrolling works fine in every other application.

I have searched everywhere on the web, and on microsoft pages, but found
nothing. Seems strange, since it shouldn't be unnormal to have a Word 2003
installation on a laptop.

Technical specifications: Dell Inspiron 2500, Windows 2000 SP4, Word 2003
SP2, the latest Synaptic touchpad driver from the Synaptics webpage (I had an
older synaptic driver from Dell's driver download site before, but still the
same problem there).

Hope someone heard of the same problem and have a solution.

To eliminate the touchpad, test with an external mouse whilst the touchpad
is disabled. That may help point to the problem.
