Scrolling with right arrow over sentence gives minus between words

When I type a sentence incorrectly for instance
How are mou? in stead of How are you?
and I want to correct the sentence by placing the mouse cursor at the
beginning of the sentence and then scrolling with the right arrow towards the
"m", the whole sentence changes to the following:
-H-o-w--a-r-e--y-o-u-?-
This happens in excel as well ...
Please advise ...
