There are various locations which you can set for Visio to search for
shapes however none of them should cause Visio to crash. The first thing to
consider is do you have any add-on loaded in Visio if so you may want to
start by disabling them. The next thing would be to check anything that may
prevent Visio from searching all locations such as the internet if you have
this option checked. You may get clues to why Visio is crashing if you
check the event logs other than these suggestions you may need to open a
support case to determine what is causing the crash.

each time I search for shapes Visio 2007 professional crashes. I have used
repair in Control Panel, I have seach the knowledge base and have run
diagnostics - I get an appscrash error.
What can I do so I can search for shapes?
