Search and replace problem

I use Word X and never had this problem before, but lately when I'm in
Track Changes, Word doesn't find certain things like some double spaces.
If I copy that same double space in a new document, the Search and
Replace function works fine.
I have changed nothing to my configuration and even tested with a fresh
installation of Word on another drive with the same results.
Any ideas?

Two possibilities: one of the spaces is "not there", or it is "not a space".

If the spaces has been marked as deleted by tracked changes, then Find
correctly ignores it, because Find works only on the end result.

There are half-a-dozen characters that "look" like a space, but in fact are
not. For example, there are a series of typographer's spaces, which are
actually fixed-width characters. Word's Find "should" treat these as
standard spaces, but if some character transposition has occurred, it may
not be able to.

Try Accepting your changes: does it work now?

Hope this helps

Yes, it works.
The problem is that I need to send the document with track changes
showing, and that it would be nice to be able to get rid of double
spaces at that stage (can't ask my client do to that).

Is it possible you are displaying ³changes while editing² and that deleted
spaces (which are not really there) are dutifully displaying themselves?

Try saving a version, accepting all changes, and searching to see if the
problem is still there?

Best,

The spaces are visible when I turn off the display of track changes, but
they are not found by Word.
If I accept the changes, the spaces are still visible in the same
manner, but now they can be found and replaced by Word.
The problem is that I need to keep the changes visible in the final
file, which precludes accepting the changes.

I should have kept a copy of the file with the problem, but I guess I
didn't.
I'll have to wait until the problem recurs in a new document.

What it sounds like to me is that you entered all these spaces while
tracking changes. It seems logical that Word won't find double-spaces where
one space is Tracked as either deleted or added, because the double-space
doesn't exist until the changes are accepted.
