Search component

G

Gabriella777_2

Can someone please send me a information for dealing with the search
component in FrontPage? I need in laymans terms not computer talk.
I am trying to add it to my intranet page to aid in searching a very long
list of hyperlinked documents.
But I am having problems with position, usage, format, etc, etc.
I simply want to search the page not the whole website and I want it be in
the upper right hand corner of my page.
I have tried putting it in a table like in one of the suggestions for
someone elses question. That gave some help but created more problems as
well.
Can someone please help?

The FP search component doesn't work in the manner you want and can not be changed to do so. If you
want to search a single page, then the page and the page with the search component must be placed
into a FP subweb/subsite.

What exactly is a subweb/subsite?
Do create a whole new website and put a link to it in the original?

Create a folder, then right click on it and select convert to web / site. Then you create your pages
and link to/from your root web.

Okay - I've done as you said - saved my page to that folder.
Made the link in the original web, opened it on the internet/intranet and
the search function will still not search my list.
I get an error page.
Now what?

Here is the complete error message:

"FrontPage Run-Time Component Page
You have submitted a form or followed a link to a page that requires a web
server and the FrontPage Server Extensions to function properly.

This form or other FrontPage component will work correctly if you publish
this web to a web server that has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.

Click the <Back> arrow to return to the previous page."

Did you http publish (not ftp) to the host that has FP server extensions
installed?

No, I'm not sure I have the authority to do so (computer access authority), I
am not the main person on the intranet. I just maintain most of it.
Is there another way to search the list on that page (each item will be
hyperlinked to a pdf document) only.

T

Tom Willett

Does the remote site have FrontPage server extensions installed?
If so, how did you upload your web?

For the search function to work, you must have FP server extensions
installed and you must http publish to it.

Good question - wish I had an answer - the guy who maintains the home page(s)
doesn't know a whole lot about it either and the person who actually set up
the site has moved out of state and our IT guys know nothing about FrontPage
- and I'm on my way out of the company as well. So . . . I need to make
this easy to maintain for who ever takes over my position.

Well, there's not much further help we can give you if you don't know the
answers to the questions.

I figured as much - thanks for trying.
Have a great day.
And thanks for this service - it has been great to know I have some way to
get answers to my computer questions!

From reading the entire thread, it sounds like you are doing
sometype of index page, no real content, just linking to
other documents.

From what I understand of this, you really do not need a
search function, as it is only 1 page. The browser has a
built in search for the page.
What I would do is to logically group the links contained
and create a bookmark. Use an index at the top of the page
to link to the groups bookmarks.
A typical implementation of this would be to group
alphabetically, and then have the alphabet at the top of the
page, with each letter linked to a bookmark placed at the
first phrase starting with that letter

That would be great if I was allowed to do that. However, the powers that be
say "no go" - so . . .
Actually, the page is a list of all the documents - some forms some
instructions only - Company policies and procedures.
The reason for the search tool is not only because of the size of the
page/list but because some of our supervisors know the documents as 1 name
and some as another and still some as the actual name.
So in an effort to eliminate the phone calls to Human Resources from people
trying to find proper document using the incorrect name - I was going to put
in a search bar.
However, it didn't work. At all.
So if you have an yet another idea - I'd sure love to hear it.

OK, so the powers don't like the bookmark list. I thought it
would have been good...
A search engine only will find the page, not the content in
the page as previously discussed.

I did find a page with a javascript on it which will create
a search form at the top, and then highlight the term(s) in
the text below. I just pasted the first section into the
body of a simple html page, and it worked in IE7, NS8 (IE
mode only), but not in NS8 (FF mode), Opera 9, or FF 2.
Maybe the other examples would cover the other browsers.

I'll let you look and decide:
