Search Criteria

I want to make a search module in my system and i need to
make the user enter the name when i search
so when i am trying to do
....... where name like '*[eNTER THE nAME]*' ......

IT DOES NOT PROMPT ME FOR THE NAME IT COMPARES WITH WHAT
IS IN THE QUOTES.
hOW WOULD I USE LIKE WITH A USER INPUT HERE.
cAN SOMEONE TELL
