search fails then problems e.g., send buttongrayed on replies, slow

After installing the latest update 12.2.0 we're experiencing severe problems with Entourage 2008: if you do an address book search (e.g., name = john) the search does not return any results (this is the 2 field search with the pick list and the text box right above the address book details pane), then all kinds of problems ensue, such as:
(1) very slow Entourage performance,
(2) if you reply to an email, the send button is grayed out and never comes on regardless of how long you wait

Steps taken so far to troubleshoot:
1. Reinstalled Office 2008 (Entourage only) from DVD (this didn't work b/c service pack 1 refuses to install)
2. move Office 2008 to trash, then reinstalled the entire Office 2008 from DVD
3. reinstalled Service Pack 1 and the 12.1.0 update

This looked like it was working initially, then everything went back to the way it was. :(

Any assistance with this problem would be appreciated.

Use the Entourage menu --> Switch Identity... command to create a new
identity and set up the account again. Does the problem remain?
(2) if you reply to an email, the send button is grayed out and never
comes on regardless of how long you wait

This is a known issue when you specifically use the mouse to pick an
address. Try using the arrow keys to pick addresses and hit either Tab
or Return to continue to the next.

(1) We will try this.
(2) We never selected an address. We chose an existing email and hit reply and the send button was immediately grayed. The only thing we did select with the mouse was the field to search on in the upper right of the Address Book screen, to go back to the inbox, highlight a message, and click on the reply button. We'll try all these operations with the keyboard, of course, but are just wondering if the same issue applies since we never selected an address. Also, wondering if a fix is pending -- this seems like a pretty serious usability bug.
