Search fields as formatted check box

Is there a setting that will allow me to set the "Search Fields As
Formatted" check box to unchecked?
This setting appears on the Find and Replace dialog box.

I cannot figure out why this is the default, as it about doubles the amount
of time it takes to return the search results? Can anyone from Microsoft
explain the rational for defaulting to checked?
