Search Fields As Formatted is checked by default in Access 2003

The "Search fields as formatted" option is checked by default and slows down
searches tremendously for my users. If they uncheck the option it stays
unchecked for that session only and is checked again the next time they open
the program. This option is not part of the Tools, Options, Edit/Find
settings. Anyone have any ideas??
