"Search" function does not recognize words used in same document

When I try to find specific word(s) elsewhere in a document, the Search
function returns no hits. How is this possible when I know that the word(s)
are being used several times in the same document?

Look under the "Find what" box. Is there any formatting indicated? Expand
the dialog (click More). Are any of the boxes checked (Match Case, for
example)?
