Searching address books from the "To:" box in a new email

Hi there. I am trying to get Outlook to automatically fill in the email
address of contacts that match the text I am typing into the "To:" box on a
new email, but it is only recognizing addresses I have already sent to. Is
there any way Outlook will start searching intelligently on what I am typing
from my address books (without requiring me to have already sent them an
email)?

I have also tried typing in the first couple of letters of a name or email
address and pressed CTRL + K, but Outlook only seems to want to search the
Global Address List. It seems that if Outlook can't find any matches in the
GAL, *then* it looks in the other address books I have (the main one being a
public address book used by the the whole company). If it does find matches
in the GAL, it doesn't bother looking in the other address books. This isn't
much use really. Again, is there any way to make it do this?

editor for the NK2 autocomplete file for Outlook. As our company has around
50 users all wanting to access a shared public address book that contains
over 1500 business contacts, it would be impossible to add each of the 1500
contacts into each user's personal NK2 file (as there is no import
function). It would also be no good for any additional contacts added to the
address book as everyone has write access to this public address book.

So, I assume there is no other way to force the autocomplete to look at the
whole address books rather than the user's NK2 file?

Also, is there not a way, when you press CTRL + K to search address books,
to make Outlook search multiple address books? It seems that if Outlook
finds matches in the Global Address List, it doesn't bother looking in the
other address books (it does however search through in the order specified
in Tools > Options in Address Book if no match is found in the GAL).

I'm not bothered if we can't find a way to get the autocomplete to do what
we want, but it's a real pain not being able to CTRL + K on all address
books.

Anyone else found a solution to this problem? I'd be most grateful !!

field, the red squiggly line appears underneath what I typed and I can
right-click to see the matches, but again (like doing a CTRL + K) it is only
finding results in the Global Address List. If it can't find results in the
GAL it seems happy enough to start searching the other address books but it
seems to be a fundamental flaw in the way it searches:- if it finds matches
in the GAL, it doesn't bother looking anywhere else. As our GAL only holds
internal company contacts (ie. users in Active Directory) this isn't much
use when trying to find an external contact in the the public address book.
Surely there must be a way to force the autoresolution or CTRL+K feature to
search all address books and not just stop when it finds a match in the GAL?

I feel like we're getting closer to an answer though!! Thanks for your help
so far!!

It's not a flaw, it's intentional. For performance reasons, automatic name
checking will only move on to other information stores if it finds no match
in the first. That's the way it's always worked.

Have you considered changing the order in which address book are searched to
more closely meet your needs?

an option to allow me to do this if I so wished, but it's no big deal. I can
change the order so that it looks in the public address book first, but of
course this means that if a match is found there, it won't look in the GAL.
However, I'd rather have that problem as it's 1500 entries (and growing) in
the public address book versus 50-odd entries in the GAL. Going to be a pain
and time-consuming having to go round each of the 50-odd user's machine and
change the search order, but it's as near to a solution as we're going to
get.

I'm not certain that this is a fix that you are looking for, but we have a
utility that will enable you to export contacts from your autocomplete file,
providing you with the ability to import them into a contact folder. And,
we are working on an import utility so that you can import contact name and
e-mail info. from your contact folders into your autocomplete cache.
