Searching in a column of strings

Hi

I try to find how many cells have a sequence of
charcters. From Cell A1:A50.

Exemple for "NY" :

cellA1 = NY123
cellA2 = NY3235
cellA3 = NY5434
cellA4 = LA4234

function(NY) = 3

Like Seach but instead to be in a single cell, it's in
a sequence of cell?
