Second Try: Word 2003 'Save As' Error on XP Box

B

brian

My last attempt to post this wouldn't work, so here goes again...

Word 2003 (part of Office 2003 Professional), SP1, hangs during simple 'Save
As' operations. I'm running XP Pro, SP2. The event viewer shows the
following application entry:

1. --> Fault bucket 117097750.
2. --> Hanging application WINWORD.EXE, version 11.0.6359.0, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

This behavior happened after I installed the eFax.com fax viewer. I started
seeing 'catastrophic MAPI module error' messages during various Outlook 2003
operations. I uninstalled the eFax s/w and the MAPI error went away.

I've noticed other actions that are likely symptomatic of the problem that
is giving me the Word fits:

1. the log on/sign on process is now unacceptably long. The time required
from machine start (I'm using a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop with a 3+ Gig
processor) to the point I see the Desktop is on the order of five minutes.
2. The error log, prior to removal of eFax.com software, showed the
following application errors during my first log on today:
a. (Interix error from my Services for UNIX 3.5 application): Could not
connect to Mapping Server at host localhost:while connecting : RPC: Remote
system error - no error string available.
b. (SQL Server 7.0, Desktop Edition: MSSQLServerOLAPService error): Cannot
start OLAP server.

Any assistance at this point is most welcome.

You've now posted three times. As I read it you are saying that the eFax.com
add-in caused your problems. Are the further problems you detail persisting
after uninstalling the software?

My apologies for the multiple posts. After posting the previous ones, I
received error messages each time I submitted. I thought that those errors
might have been related in some fashion to my current woes.

Yes, I suspected the eFax.com add-in was the cause. The 'Save As' errors
persist, however, after I uninstalled this add-in.

When you were asked to send information on the problem to Microsoft, did you
do so? If this is a known problem, you will immediately be given information
on the solution. I'm afraid only MS can make much of the fault bucket data;
certainly I haven't a clue. But perhaps someone else here will know more.

B

I did indeed. Unfortunately neither of the 'hang' messages I'm receiving had
any MS Knowledge Base article information available.

Based on your description I'd say the problems you are encountering
originate in Windows, rather than Word. I suspect the hang you are
encountering in Word is a symptom of the underlying issue and once you
have that resolved your Word issue will be resolved.

I would try a Windows XP newsgroup and see if they can help.

Also, the error message you are encountering when you post is
referring to the "Notification" getting posted in your profile rather
than your newsgroup post.

Should you encounter the message again disregard, log off and log back
on, and locate your post later and use the "Notify me of Replies"
option if you want to receive notifications for replies.

If this becomes a nuisance then try using the Office portal, which
should have this issue rectified, to access the newsgroups instead:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/com...&cr=US&dg=microsoft.public.word.docmanagement

If you are already using the Office portal and are encountering the
error message then please let us know so we can pass this information
on to Microsoft.

Thank you Beth. Regarding the posting error, yes I am using the Office
portal and am seeing the error. In fact, if I get the error again, I'll grab
the text and paste it in a second reply to this message so that you/MS see
what I see.

I did some checking on the MAPI error message [Managed MAPI Service
Catastrophic Failure] I saw in Outlook and found numerous references to the
Business Contact Manager. The Word and Outlook problems appear(for now
anyway) to have gone away after I did the following three things:

1. Ran scanpst.exe on my outlook.pst file. This utility found 44 errors
from the .pst file I initially brought across from Outlook XP that I'm
running on a W2K box nearby.
2. Used the 'unofficial' patch described at
http://blogs.officezealot.com/gorlach/archive/2004/07/20.aspx.
3. Ran Office 2003's Detect and Repair utility.

I'll see how things go from here. For now, Word and Outlook are humming
along with no further issues.

The Office portal generated the following error:

The error appears regardless of the length of time I've been logged into the
Office portal. Case in point: I posted the error message/sent my reply (to
you) in less than a minute last time. The error still appears. I think I'm
safe to say that I'm not hitting any session length limit that the portal has
in place.

Thanks for the additional info. I agree, you aren't hitting a time limit
which is actually pretty liberal, a few hours.

Due to the weekend I haven't heard anything but if you don't use the "Notify
me of replies" option as you are creating your post you will not encounter
the message. If you want to be notified then unforunately you'll need to use
the option after your post appears.
