section break different type when linked

I have linked a number of small .doc files into a larger .doc file.
In one of the small files, I have inserted two continuous breaks. The
beginning and end of the doc are single column, and the middle section
is two column.
In the main document, the second section break of this linked file
shows as (next page) rather than (continuous).
I tried adding text prior and after the problematic break in the small
(source) file, and the behaviour persists.
Any suggestions?
