Section break size

In writing a large book with several files I have encountered a problem. In
one file the the blue line showing section break is @ 1/4" above the footer
line however in another file it is more than 3/4" and is affecting footnotes
and text. How can this space be reduced to that required for the footer.

The section break may have acquired some unwanted formatting. You can select
it and set the Line Spacing to "Exactly" 1 pt, Spacing Before/After to zero,
and font size to 1 pt. You may even format the break as hidden text. Does
that make a difference?

Note that dealing with breaks and paragrah marks will be easier if you first
display nonprinting marks (you can use Ctrl+Shift+8 as a toggle).

I should have clarified that I was referring to the position relative the
preceding paragraph (which obviously depends on line spacing, spacing
before/after and point size).

Good point. Although you might expect Spacing After to be suppressed before
a Next Page section break, it evidently isn't (nor is it before a column or
page break).
