Section Breaks - separate headers/footers

Susan

I'm preparing an 840-page spec that must have pages
numbered consecutively in the footer(Page 1 of 840), but
headers must be different from section to section. The
first 65 pages may refer to "Section 1: Doors", the next
40 pages to "Section 2: Windows", and so on.

Is there a section break that will allow headers to change
but footers to remain constant across a section break?

Losing my hair.....

Thanks! >>Susan<<

You don't need a section break for this, just a StyleRef field. Assume that
you have, in the body of your document "Section 1: Doors" formatted using
the Heading 1 style. The next use of the Heading 1 style is "Section 2:
Windows." The field { StyleRef "Heading 1" \* CharFormat } will duplicate
that text in your header and change when the next heading 1 comes along. See
the StyleRef and TextBoxes tutorial at
http://addbalance.com/word/download.htm.

For more on headers and footers and sections see

Charles answered your question, but keep in mind that you don't necessarily
need section breaks to change headers and footers, and that when using
sections breaks, headers and footers can be unlinked separately.

Can't wait to try this out....along w/reading some of your
suggested documentation below your sigt. Just when I
think I know something, a challenge like this comes along
to show me how much more I have to learn. Thanks, both of
you!

will duplicate that text in your header and change when
the next heading 1 comes along.

You can find it in help looking for "dictionary-style" I think. Almost
everything is in help, if only you knew where to look. But then, if you knew
where to look, you probably wouldn't need the help!
