Section Breaks

These things really confuse me. When I want to replace a continuous break
with a next page break, Word reverts to continuous. On top of that, it mucks
about with the footers and formatting. Can someone point me to some nice
explanations on the differences of the various section break types and when
they would be appropriate to use?

Why would using a Next Page break be better than Odd Page or Even Page?

Why can't I simply replace a Continuous break with a Next Page break?

I remember trying to use the odd/even breaks and ended up with empty footers
on the blank pages. The publisher was not happy and I had to reformat an
entire book for free.

Remember that each section break stores the section formatting (page setup,
headers and footers, and columns) of the *previous* section; for more on
this, see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/WorkWithSections.htm.

To change the type of section, don't mess with the inserted section breaks.
Instead, use the Layout tab of the Page Setup dialog box, where you can
choose the "Section start" option as desired.

Which type of section that you need depends on which result you want... Next
page breaks just starts the section on the next page. Continuous breaks are
intended for layout changes within a page. Odd page breaks are required when
you want the next section to always start on an odd page (and similarly for
even page breaks).
