Section breaks

I have a lengthy document with numerous chapters. At the beginning of each
chapter I have entered a 'next page section break'. For some reason some of
those section breaks are changed to 'odd page'. I started back at the
beginning of the document, deleted the first 'odd page' break I found and
replaced it with a 'next page' break, but when I repeated that farther into
the document, it changed the first one back to 'odd page' again. Help!

Does the document contain landscape pages? These can force an odd page
break. Are you restarting numbering in each chapter? If so, Word will insist
that page 1 be an odd page (as it is).

There are no landscape pages and the numbering is continuous. This document
was initially created in Word Perfect and converted. The conversion was not
perfect of course and it was liberally sprinkled with "continuous section
breaks". My attempts to clean it up finally ended up with removal of all
"continuous section breaks". I then inserted "next page section breaks", but
the page numbering was wrong and as I said, many of the "next page section
breaks" were getting changed to "odd page section breaks" as I moved through
the document. I finally gave up, took out all section breaks and replaced
them with page breaks (control/return). I saved the document and closed it.
When I reopened it, I replaced a few of the page breaks with "odd page
section breaks" (where absolutely necessary). That seems to have taken care
of my problem, but it definitely doesn't explain what was going on and I
would prefer to be able to use "next page section breaks" at the beginning of
chapters in other documents I create (not in WordPerfect!), so I would like
to know what was going on. Thanks for any help you can provide!

If there's no good reason for Word to make the change, you can usually
reverse it by changing the section start type on the Layout tab of Page
Setup.

Thanks, but that is how I was trying to do it. Oh well, it's fixed now, so I
won't worry about it any longer. Thanks for taking the time to help me.
