Section Events

Can anyone explain to a layman, the difference and purpose of the three
section events, Format, Print, and Retreat? Especially the Retreat event,
when and why (under what circumstances) does it fire? An example or two
would be great - and a reference to a good web page that discusses it as
well.

Thanks

Hi,

The Format event fires when Access reach the data to be considered. You can
cancel the actual 'section' and even modify the layout. A cancel remove all
the space.

The Print event fires just before the "formatted" data is to be printed. You
cannot change the layout. You can assume the data would be printed, so it is
a nice place to handle "cumulative" sum, as example (for a sum of data on a
Page, as example). A cancel leave the space blank.

The Retreat event fires when Access has to backtrack, such as in a
KeepTogether would be violated, then the Print event did already fire. You
can update your "cumulative" sum, still as example, to remove the data that
is about to be "retreated".

ADH (Access xx Developer's Handbook, xx==version ) and Access 2003 Inside
Out are two books that speak of these events.

You may try in the newsgroup dedicated to reports.

Hoping it may help,
