Section number-driven page numbering problem

Hans

I have a page numbering error I'm unable to solve:

The doc's page numbers contain both a section number and a page number. The
section number is pulled from a numbered Heading 1 style.

Part way through the doc, the section number in the footer will not
increment to the next section number, e.g., the numbering goes from IV-## in
one section, then, desptie adding a Section Break (Next Page), the next
section's numbering continues with IV-##.

Note that I do NOT have Same as Previous selected on the Footer.

Further, moments earlier, I had a similar problem with the numbering,
except, at that time, the section numbering **skipped** a digit, e.g., it
went from IV-## to VI-##.

I looked through all of the text in the two sections for an errant Heading 1
style that might somehow be throwing me off, but I found none.

I have tried reverting headings back to Normal style, then promoting them to
Heading 1, but to no avail.

Thanks,

-Hans

Additional oddity:

When I double-click on the page numbering to activate the Header/Footer
view, I instead get the Bullets & Numbering dialog box.

If you are tracking changes, numbering will not be correct until you've
accepted all the changes.

I spoke too soon.

I confirmed that Reviewing is turned off, and Accepted All Changes.

When I attempted to re-paginate, the Section number still fails to increment
properly.

Bummer.

Billable time is overrated anyway...

You do have a Heading 1 numbered V on the first page of the section? FWIW,
it should not be necessary to unlink the headers for this to work correctly.
You do need a section break to restart numbering at 1, but the "section"
("chapter") numbering based on the number of Heading 1 should increment
correctly without unlinking the headers.

Hi Suzanne,

Yup, I've got Heading 1 text numbered "V" on the first page of the section.
However, Word incorrectly defaulted the Heading 1 numbering to **VI** (the
prior Section is **IV**), so I had to manually "force" the proper number V by
2x-clicking on the VI, then getting to the Customize Outlined Numbered List
dialog box, then changing the number to V.

Nonetheless, the section page numbering remains incorrect at "IV-##" (even
after updating the field).

After making the section number correction, the TOC displays it correctly;
however, as in the footers, the section page numbering is incorrect, showing
IV-##.

Is there a ghost in the machine? :)

Thank you for your assistance,

You need to get your numbering problem worked out. I'm guessing you've got a
Heading 1 paragraph somewhere that Word wants to number V and that's why
you're getting VI. This can happen if you insert a manual page break before
a heading (instead of using "Page break before" formatting), as the page
break acquires the paragraph style; I imagine this could happen to a section
break as well. In any case, you need to get the heading numbering
straightened out before you can worry about page numbering. If you haven't
already read and memorized it, see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html for the do's
and don'ts of heading numbering.

Suzanne,

I have solved the problem!

Approximately 35 pages of client-supplied text brought into the document
contains a style based on Heading 1. In this text, there was a *single*
instance of this style, which threw off the numbering.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards from Seattle,

-Hans
