Security and network performance

Hi,

I'm experiencing a performance problem opening MSAccess 2000 .mdb files.
One specific instance of this would be when manually opening a table view.
When joined to the security file it takes 10-12 seconds to get an initial
display of the table data, regardless of table size and the particular .mdb
to which I'm connecting, whether it be local or on a file server over a LAN.

I realize that you're always joined to a security file when opening an .mdb.
The security .mdw which seems to be causing a problem is that which is used
by many users for several databases. Most of users (55 of 60) have only
'read' permissions.

If I open a database on a desktop pc using the local default system.mdw the
performance for a manual open of a table is virtually instantaneous.

Is there some way to speed up performance where a user is manually working
on a table's data? I have noticed some slowdown with programmatic access to
data (Access VBA & VB6), as well. I need security and I'd like to keep this
administration of security for multiple databases contained within a single
..mdw.

I hope someone can provide me some pointers on performance issues relating
to security.

Thanks,
JPM
