security center disabled!

a virus disabled my windows security centre, the virus is now gone, but i am
unable to restart the security center. I go into the centre but it gives me a
message 'due to an unidentified problem windows cannot display firewall
settings'.
i can't even re download service pack 2 becasue microsoft keep sending me to
the updates section and it says i already have it! can anybody help?

I have the same trouble. There seems to be a lot of difficulty with the
security but no real solutions that have worked for me. Some of the info
posted here point to examining the services menu etc. but no joy for me in
any of it!!

Thats right, the virus orignally placed popup adds and directed me to a
spywear programme advert 'spysherrif' i think. i found the key which was
'wupdmgr.exe' which i had to remove in safe mode to stop it kicking off when
ever i started windows in normal mode. THis remained on even though i had got
rid of the virus with a special tool, but alas the security centre still did
not work. I wonder if there is anyway to ask microsoft for the solution
