MS Project 2003 (11.2.2005.1801.15) SP2 Project Server 2003 SP2

What is the best way to only allow administrator to create new projects on
Project Server? We have templates and want to ensure a template is used for
all project schedules on the server. The administrator would create the
schedule from a template and set the required project information fields and
save the schedule as the correct name to the server. Then the PM assigned to
it would open it, plan it and eventaully take weekly preformance and save it
(on the server). I just want them to have access to save a schedule that is
already on the server not be able to save the schedule the initial time to
the server.

Peggy you can set deny to create project within Project Server for this user
group. this may does the job for you

I do not see "create projects", is it "new project" under "set global
permissions for this group"? Right now "allow" is checked. What is the
difference in checking "deny" vs. unchecking both? Again, I do want them to
be able to save a project they modify that is already on the server, I just
don't want them to create a new project from a template and save it or be
able to open one that exists on the server and save it as a different back to
the server.
Thank you,
Peggy

Hi Peggy,

Yes I mean the "new projects".
The difference between setting explicit "deny" means that independently to
what group the user belongs he/she will not be able to use this feature.

If you dont set it and the user is member of 2 groups wherby one has allow,
it would mean that the use would be allowed to use the feature.

I believe that the user can still work on exisiting projects, but cant
create new projects. The best idea is to set up a test Project Manager and
test before you actually to the change in the production environment.
Hope this helps

I believe this is also the only way you can restrict a group from importing
..mpp files to the server as well. Is this correct?

If deny new project is set for Project Leads, then administrators cannot
change the owner of the project to the Projrect Lead because they will not
show in the drop down selection to chose from. The ownership list comes from
names of people who saved projects to the server, right? How can I limit
creating new projects to administrators and then turn it over to a Project
Lead to plan and execute which means regular weekly updates and saving to the
server.
Thank you,
