I had the same problem. Here is what I did to fix or workaround it.
1. Downloaded the full install of the patch from microsoft.
2. Ran the install and when the error 1494 came up (couldn't write to reg
key blah blah) I chose ignore. Do this like 5 times.
Wait for install to complete.

Hello,

I am also having this same issue.

If I just allow windows update to install the update it just provides a very
plain message that the update failed. It would be nice if MS would expand on
the error.

I then downloaded the Full Install of this update.

When I run the Full install update, I now am told that a *.tmp file does
note exist, and I am given an error code of 1010.

If I watch the folder that update is expanding all of its files into, the
tmp file that I am told does not exist, does exist. The file in question is
not a zero byte file, and the full name changes with each try at installing
the update.

After I am told about this file issue, and while still looking in the folder
I see the file change to a zero byte file size.

I am running XP Pro, not on a Domain, and I have run the update as the ADMIN.

I have disabled Anti-virus - NOD32, and MS Defender, even though this was
not an issue on the pc's at work the are running the same, just that the work
pc's are on a domain.

This pc had XP pro clean install not that long ago, and has not been used
that much.

I am running out of ideas, if have or anyone has an idea that would be great.

Thanks for reading, and your time,

Stephen

I have already posted in another thread but I will post here too to hopefully
get a quicker response. I have tried all methods that were listed in groups
and the microsoft site. Some people were able to get their problem
resolved...unfortunately i haven't had one successful attempt. I've turned
off AV and spyware. I have tried the registry fix and checked the OSE. I
tried installing the full .exe of the update and get an error of "ERROR 1101
error reading from file: C:\\windows\installer\MSI1751.tmp. Verify the file
exist and can be access it. "
I've tried reinstalling Office on a clean machine(reinstalled windows xp
pro) and cannot get it working. I need help!

I ran into the same problem. When I tried to download the update manually and
install it, it failed with:

Error 1101, Error reading from file: c:\windows\installer\MSIxxx.tmp.
Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

where xxx was some number.

I then went and stopped EVERYTHING... disabled all features of NOD32,
stopped all non-essential services, killed all non-essential tasks with the
Task Manager, and retried. The update then completed successfully.

Curiously, I haven't had problems with this update on several other
computers with nearly identical software configurations (in particular, the
same antivirus program, NOD32.)
