Security Updates for Office 97

J

Jeff

There are a number of security hotfixes or updates
mentioned on the MS security website right now. All are
available for download, except for the Office 97
versions. For those, a link propmpts you to call MS
support. Does anyone know which number to call (Basic or
Advanced support?) and if the updates are available for
free?

The updates are available for free and the link in the article gives you the
page where you can find your local telephone number.

I've spent two hours on Microsoft's web sites trying to
find these hotfixes for Office 97 and can't find a link
anywhere. The only free phone number I've seen is "866
PCSAFETY" and that's not even a phone number (too many
digits). Has anyone else had any luck?

From the MSKB article referenced by the TechNel Security Bulletin:

Important Before you install the Word 97 Security Hotfix, install the
Microsoft Word 97 Service Release 2b (SR-2b). Although the Word 97 Security
Hotfix will install if you do not have Microsoft Word 97 SR-2b installed on
your computer, the Word 97 Security Hotfix is only supported by Microsoft on
Word 97 SR-2b.

For additional information about how to install Microsoft Word 97 Service
Release 2b (SR-2b), click the following article number to view the article

For information how to install the Korean version of Office 97 SR-2, visit
the following Microsoft Web site:

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support
Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the
specific update in question.

Aye, I got that far and read all that information.
However, when I called 866 PCSAFETY, they said that Office
97 is obsolete, and thus unsupported. The patch thats out
there works for only 2000 and up. So basically Office 97
users are vulnerable and unpatchable. If this is not the
case then please let me know, cause I wish to patch up my
stuff before MSBLASTER.STUPID takes control of yet another
one of my supported PC's.
