Hello,

Everytime I open a email with an attachment Microsoft Office Outlook gives
me the following warning:
This file may contain a virus that could harm your computer. The file should
be saved before you can open it. It is important that you are absolutely sure
that the file is safe before you open it.

Does anyone know how I can prevent Outlook from giving this warning? I know
I have to use the Resource kit, but I do not know where to get this or how to
use it.

Many many thanks for the person that can give me this information.

Sue, I have tried this fix and I still get the warning when trying to save a
word document or any office file.

Sorry, I think I was thinking of a different security prompt (and you didn't mention Word documents originally). You definitely don't want to add DOC to the Level1Remove key.

Did you check the "confirm after download" setting for Doc files in Windows Explorer, in Tools | Folder Options | File Types?

I looked for the confirm after download you were talking about and could not
find it located anywhere. My user gets the message when she tries to open any
office document. I hvae another user that is using the same version but she
does not get the message when opening a document. Do you think it could be a
security update that one installed and the other didnt? Any advice is helpful.

In Windows Explorer, Tools | Folder Options | File Types. Select DOC, then click Advanced.

I think there's another setting involved, too, but I can never find it when I need it. I'll keep looking.

I want to make sure we are talking about the same thing. When my user in
outlook tries to open a office document from an attachement she gets the
security warning and it will only let her save it not open it. I tried all
the fixes and it doesnt work. is there a way around it otherwise?

Hi,

I have faced this same problem you describe in a user machine and the
solution involves the manipulation of the registry.

You (or some app) may have inserted the Level1Remove key with some
attachments that are already unlocked (like the .doc for example). See if
this is the case:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security
Key: Level1Remove (REG_SZ)
Value: .doc; .mdb (this can have any extension)

This may have led the extension to be locked (crazy isn't it ? You try to
unlock the extension and it actually lock it). If you level1remove key
includes the attachment you are trying to open, remove the extension from the
list, close Outlook and try again. If you Level1Remove does not contain the
extension of the file you are intendind to open, then check if the following
key has this setting:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security
Key: Level (REG_DWORD)
Value: 3 (0x00000003)

To be very clear, you should only use Level1Remove in extensions that are
REALLY blocked (they appear grayed in outlook). The files that do not appear
dimmed in Outlook should not be used in Level1Remove key. If you use it, it
will cause this misbehavior that you cite in this thread.

I hope this information is helpful to you.
