I had a hard time solving this one, but if the Select All button on the
Styles and formatting pane is grayed out (or the drop down menu says "Select
All: Not Currently Used", it is because of the following setting:
Tools>Options>Edit
The "Keep Track of Formatting" option is disabled.
When you enable it, you can select all lines contaning a certain type of
formatting by using the select all button ... but Word will also create new
styles in your document based on your direct formatting.
Hope that saves someone the pain I went through ...
