Select All+F9 does not update fields

Hi - I've been using Select All+F9 to update fields & TOC in Word docs for
years. Different job, using XP and Word 2003, it no longer works. Using
Print Preview to update fields 1/2 works - when I linked to a Heading #
followed by Heading Title, it only updated the title, not the Heading #, and
the TOC did not update. I'd rather not have to switch to Print Preview to
update fields and it's not updating everything I need. Any suggestions?

Two options come to mind:
1. Track changes still on? If so, Accept/reject any in the document, trun
off TC.
2. Locked fields - Ctrl+Shift+F11 to unlock.
