Select Name window Freezes Outlook

Outlook 2002 sp2 XP Pro
When I click the To: button, the select names window
opens. I cannot select any names as Outlook freezes
completely. I have to close the entire program through
Ctl Alt Del. I used the cd to do a fix and repair, but it
did not fix or repair the problem.

It first happened when I tried to forward an email. I
clicked on the To: button to select contacts. The select
names window came up. All of the functions on the window
were frozen. I could not select any names by double
ckicking or highlighting and moving. I found that I could
not cancel the window. When I tried to open any other app
in Outlook, it was frozen and not working. The only way I
could get out of the select names window and the forward
message window was by using Ctl Alt Del and shutting down
Outlook completely. I cannot put my finger on what lead
up to the first isntance of it happening. I tried the fix
and repair option, and did a restore prior to the date it
began happening without any change. If the only
suggestion is to uninstall Outlook, I will need some
advice on how to save my files in all of the personal
folders.

Some additional information is that there are not error
messages associated with the screen hanging up.

No, uninstalling Outlook won't help. The only thing that might is to remove
and re-add the Outlook Address Book Service. Go to Tools | E-mail accounts,
select "View or change existing directories or address books", and click OK.
Remove the OAB. Restart Outlook. Re-add the OAB and then click Change to
make sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of
them aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

Thanks for your suggestion, I tried that without any
change. I gave the issue some thought and decided to look
at my contacts folder in a little more detail. In
checking a distribution list, I saw that there were
duplicate entries for some contacts. I synch a Palm 515
with Outlook using pocket mirror. I opened the duplicate
entries and saw that some of them were not configured for
email use. One listed a FAX number as the email address.
I removed all of the non email duplicates and found that
the select name option now works. The only thing I can
figure is that the duplicates were corrupting the folder.
I haven't synched the Palm since to see if it will cause
the problem again. Your suggestions were very helpful in
directing me to look critically at the Address book.

Interesting. The next step would have been to run the Inbox Repair Tool on
your PST file. I wonder if it would have found that problem.
