Select text - Backspace key disable

I have found a couple of references to this, but no answers.

When I select/highlight text with the mouse or by holding shift and the
arrow keys (I don't normally use the latter, but I tried it to see if
it was at all related to the text being selected with the mouse) I am
not able to delete the text using the backspace key, only the delete
key.

It only occurs in MSWord, and I believe it may have been caused by one
of the macros I was toying with, but I cannot for the life of me find
the cause/command that changed the functionality.

MSWord V2002 SP3

any help is greatly appreciated.

It also does not replace text if I have highlighted the string and
start typing.

Tools->Options. Select the Edit tab and check "Typing replaces
selection."
