Selecting all text?

alex

My former version of Word (probably '97) allowed me to select a
portion of a word and when I, for example, hit shift F7 for the
thesaurus, it recognized the entire word and not just the selected
portion. Word '03, however, is not so generous. This option seems
to have noting to do with "When selecting, automatically select
entire word" option, because it doesn't work. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Hi Alex,

I also use Word 2003.

Whenever I'm in a document and want the thesaurus, I right click
anywhere in the word ( I don't highlight any portion of it at all) and
on the shortcut menu, I click "lookup". My research task pane then
opens up on the right side of my page with the thesaurus. I find this
method quicker than always needing to go up to the Standard toolbar and
clicking on the research button. I'm not sure why yours isn't working,
because your settings sound correct.

Good luck with this!

Oops, I forgot to add that if I DO highlight any portion of the
word...that's all I get in the thesaurus (only the portion selected)!

Karen,

I didn't know about the lookup function. Thanks for your feedback.
You helped me discover my problem. I too use a shortcut for accessing
the thesaurus. It's always been shift F7. My problem is that I was
highlighting a portion of the text (something I was able to do in
previous versions). Until now, in order to use shift F7 I needed to
highlight the whole text. I just discovered, however, that shift F7
selects the entire word when you do not highlight. Thanks again.

You're most welcome, Alex. :)

I rely on these forums a LOT to figure out these similar frustrating
quirks in Office 2003!

All the best to you!

Holding ALT and click-dragging the mouse is particularly interesting
