Selecting field

I am having trouble selecting text being displayed from a field (i.e. with field code turned off) in Word 2003. When I do this in addition to selecting the field Word automatically selects the file menu from the menu bar (just as if I had pressed <Alt>).

This is extremely annoying, because I can't use keyboard shortcuts without first hitting <Esc> to deselect the menu. Have you got any idea how I can stop Word from doing this?

I've NEVER seen Word 2003 do this, and I've been working with it for over a year
now (three beta builds, plus the final release).

What type of field are you trying to select? Is it part of "plain text" or in a
table, text box or something like that? Is it at the beginning or end of the
document, or adjacent to anything in particular?

If you hold down the CTRL key when starting Word does the problem still occur?

I have the problem when I select anything I have tested
aside from plain text (e.g. a footnote, a cross-
reference, part of a table of contents).

No, the problem does not occur when I start Word in safe
mode. It started occuring when I installed the KB828041
update.

normal.dot file and that fixed it.

Hi Nathan,

In case anyone else has the same problem, I deleted my
