Selecting Number List Changes Style to a Heading

M

Michael

When I write a list of items and change it to a number list, the paragraph
styles change to Heading 1 or Heading 4. I use headings extensively, but this
is not what I want at this point in the document. I just want a simple
numbered list; not a heading. I cannot seem to use the numbered lists feature
anymore.

This problem happened suddenly after working with the document for weeks
without problems. Already existing lists are fine. I can copy these lists and
reuse them, but I cannot create a new list from scratch. If I change the
style back to normal and try to alter the number format, it changes the
numbering scheme for the enter document including all the Headings. Something
is cross-wired.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing you are using the Number button on the Formatting toolbar
to create numbered lists? That will always apply the most recent
format. One way to make the toolbar button a little more predictable
is to Reset the various number and bullet formats in the Format |
Bullets and Numbering dialog box. However, in the long run, you must
set up numbering using styles. For single-level numbering, you can use
the built-in List Number style, which you can modify to suit your
needs. For multi-level numbering, see

Thank you. This is what I did. You also answered some other questions about
the odd behavior of the number and bullet buttons in the tool bar. I knew
there were some connections to previous settings, but never realized how
deeply this might impact styles in a more sophisticated document.
