Selecting one cell causes selection to lock

When i open my excel spreadsheets if i click in any one
cell it causes to program to lock as if I am clicking and
dragging. the only way to get out of it is to exit the
program via the taskbar. i am using office xp and if i
switch to my wife's side of windows xp excel works
perfectly. what is going on?

Hey Scott,
I dissambled my mouse to find a loose spring( and a lot of other discusting crud) once I replaced the spring it worked like a charm in excel)

This is not the problem. we use windows xp and if i

switch to my wifes "side" excel works just fine. the
problem is in the program
