Selecting Text - how do you slow down selection using the mouse?

When selecting text using the mouse in Word, the scrolling speed is too fast
so when you drag the mouse down, it scrolls very quickly to the end of the
document and selects the whole lot. How do you change the selection speed so
you can select only the text you need?

You can't slow down the mouse-driven scrolling. Word 2003 is supposed
to have made this more controllable, but it's still unreliable as far
as I can see.

Put the cursor at the beginning of the text you want to select. Use
the vertical scroll bar or the mouse wheel to bring the other end into
view, and hold Shift while you click. Or else hold Shift while you use
the arrow keys or Page Up/Down keys.
