selecting text with kb

hello,

is there a way to select a word using the keyboard only?

currently, i can double click on a word with the mouse
to select it. (but want to eliminate the use of the mouse)

and if i have the cursor on the word, i can use shift arrow
and slowly select the word (but want to eliminate manually
repositioning the cursor to the beginning or the end of the word)

Sot is there a way whereas the cursor can be somewhere
on or in the word and then i can press a key combination
to automatically select that entire word?

i figure there might not be one
so i created a macro.

basically when i now press ctrl z
my macro will do a shift left right arrow
then a ctrl right arrow and will capture the word
automatically.

yeh,
the reason is that i use a program
called clever keys and if a word is selected
a ctrl space will do an automatic lookup at
http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/

however the little free program requied that
the word be selected first before it could take it and paste
it into the browse field of the website.

The included proofing tools is very
limited for my purposes. But this little
program is very handy and helpful.....

The mouse is also helpful in most purposes,
but is a distraction when focus on the keyboard
is a priority for me and my project/papers....

You can but it's a pain in the patoot using the arrow keys. May I ask why
you want to eliminate the use of the mouse?

You can use the Shift + Ctrl key and whichever arrow key but the mouse is
much easier.

I think your best non-mousing method would be ctrl-left arrow to move cursor
to beginning of word, followed by ctrl-shft-right arrow to select all word.

Sounds like a good candidate to make into a macro.

(JoAnn - some folks do like to keep hands on the keyboard and limit reaching
for the rodent. Easier? Not always.)

It sounds like you want the Extend Selection commands using F8:

- F8 + any letter/symbol/number will select up to the letter/symbol/number
in the document. For exmple, press a period to select by sentace or press
Enter to selection by paragraph.
- F8 two times will select a word
- F8 three times will select a sentance
- F8 four times will select a paragraph
- F8 five times will select the entire document
- Press Esc to turn off Extend Selection
