Selecting whole doc by mistake

I'm using word 2004 sp1. I keep getting odd behaviour, and I wonder if
anyone else is too. When I select an item like a table, or a title,
and change its color or formatting using the toolbar, the whole
document takes on this format. When I hit command-Z to undo, I get the
formatting just on the section I highlighted. Before I change
anything, I only see a highlight on the bit I want to change. Any
ideas would be welcome.....

This sounds like a "feature" that was driving me bonkers in Word X
for a while. Try selecting Format > Style, then choose a style
(e.g. Normal) and click the Modify button. When the Modify Style
window appears, look to see whether the Automatically Update box
is checked. If it is, uncheck it. That should make your problem
go away.
