Selection by Custom Properties

I am trying to select shapes based on Custom properties. And I am not good at VBA.

What I am wondering is what is behind the Add-On "Color by Values" which must include most of what I want. Do any of you know the code or how to get to it?

Additionally - how can I set Shape layer membership based on Custom Properties? The string in the ShapeSheet for Layer membership is keeping me away from trying...
