selection locked in word

I have a full 2007 version that has been activated. I've read through these
threads and tried everything but to no avail. Please help!

If this happens in all new, blank documents, you may want to exit Word and
rename the normal.dotm file; you can search for the file in Windows (be sure
to search hidden files and folders).

It could also mean that you have a trial version of Office that has expired.
Did you get this with a new PC and how long ago?
