selections expand & contract

In Office XP, Word 2002 SP3:
When I select text using the shift key and click-and-drag
the mouse, let's say two paragraphs, and I continue hold
the shift key down for a couple seconds, while I decide
whether to include the next paragraph in the selection,
one of the following generally occurs:

1) some portion of text FOLLOWING my selection, maybe
two and a half additional paragraphs are suddenly
highlighted and included in my selection OR

2) some portion of text PRECEDING my selection, maybe
two and a half additional paragraphs are suddenly
highlighted and included in my selection OR

3) some portion of text, maybe one and a half words,
loose their highlighting and are dropped from my selection.
In examples 1) and 2), above, the extremity (outside end)
of the extended selection appears to be in line with the
end of my original selection.
Sometimes, when I release the shift key, and press
the "ESC" key, the selction does not become unselected.
Sometimes clicking the mouse also does not de-select it.
I just have to wait for it to get ready to work again.

Are you trying to use Non-adjacent selection of text? If so, you use only
the Control Key on your keyboard, release and navigate to the next section
of the document and hold down control key again and proceed to select the
text using the cursor.

Oh. I inadvertantly omitted my name, so was listed as
simply "anonymous."

Anyway:

nope. these are contiguous.
