selective outline numbering?

I'm trying to number my sections (1, 1.1, 1.1.1, 2, etc.) using the "bullets
and numbering" function. I need to include Heading 1's number in the TOC
but not in the actual chapter. I can get the effect:

TOC:

1 Chapter 1
1.1 Sub section in chapter 1

But in the actual section I want

1 Chapter 1

1.1. Sub section in chapter 1.

I need to remove the heading 1 text "1" from the chapter so I use the bullet
and numbering function. I select the "Chapter 1" text and then in the
"Apply changes to:" I select "selected text only". The problem now is that
the following sub section is now numbered:

TOC:

1 Chapter 1

1.1 Sub section in chapter 1

Chapter 1

.1. Sub section in chapter 1.

I can't seem to get past this. Any changes I make here are reflected in the
whole document - but not the TOC unless I force it to update the entire
content.

I've downloaded and installed Office 2K SP3 today and I think that was my
first mistake for the day. This was working yesterday.

I need SP3 to get around a persistent crash of Word2K when I attempt to do
the bullet and numbering function on one of my machines. It would crash
word when I clicked the "customize" button 100% of the time but after the
update it doesn't crash. I don't like to back out upgrades but this may be
a first.

Any ideas?

TIA,
Ken Erickson

Hi Ken

One way around this is to set up the heading styles with numbering the way
you want it in the body of the document (in this case, presumably with the
word "Chapter" followed by the level 1 autonumber), and add numbering to the
TOC1 style so that the heading 1 entries take the extra initial number in
the TOC.

Stick to styles, and don't try to change the numbering using the bullet and
numbering function, which is a disaster area.

If you haven't done already, have a look at

Margaret,

I think I found a better solution to my problem of "hidden text" in my
"Heading 1" fields. I used format -> bullet and numbering -> outline
numbered -> customized -> font and then clicked "hidden" and followed with
"nothing". This did the trick for both the index and all my "Heading 1"
fields.

Thanks,

Hi Ken

Thanks for posting this - another trick to remember :)

(I tend not to think of hiding numbers, since I'm sure when the new
numbering came in with the full range of bugs in the first release of 97 I
found hidden numbers didn't count - or if I was hallicinating then I must
have spent hours on workarounds for non problems :-( .)
