Selling old copy of Office 2003 - activation on new PC

I upgraded to Office 2007 by purchasing the home & student edition, and am
considering selling my old Office 2003 Student & Teacher Edition but am
concerned about whether it would activate on the purchaser's computer as I
had to activate it several times on my laptop (I have reformatted it two or
three times and had to re-activate Office). I may have also installed it on
my brother's computer (as it is licensed for three), but to be honest I can't
remember. Should it still activate at least one more time because most of my
activations were on the same computer? How can it be rectified if it won't
activate again? I read somewhere you can get through to an operator if you
activate by phone and explain the situation - is this facility available in
Australia?

You can NOT sell it if:
a) It's an OEM version (i.e. came pre-installed on your machine)
b) If it is still installed on one machine at your location. (If your
brother's machine is in a different location then AFAIK you have violated
the terms of the EULA anyway......)

It's an OEM version (Office 2003 Student & Teacher Edition ) and it will not activate on the buyer's computer. It dies with your machine.

The OP actually stated in the original message "my brother's computer (as it
is licensed for three), " which would make it a retail and not an OEM
version.

Gordon.

One of my normal misreads. I have no idea how I came to that conclusion. I guess too many posts that this happens and usually an OEM subject.

Thanks Gordon

Thanks for your responses so far.
It is a full retail boxed version, licensed for three PCs.
My brother's computer is on the same premises so if it is on that one it's
within the restrictions of the EULA. His computer is currently in for repairs
so I can't check, but it is likely I upgraded his to 2007 also as I have the
three-user version of that.
So if I ensure it is uninstalled from all PCs in my house should it work on
someone else's?

Yes it should. When you sell it tell the purchaser exactly what the old
software was installed on, give the new purchaser a bill of sale for the
software, along with disk, license key, etc. to prove that you sold the
software. Also tell the purchaser that if the online activation does not
work, they may have to call Microsoft and explain the reason for activation
on different systems. Remember, they now have the "bill of sale."
