semitransparent shadows in CMYK - possible?

Hi all

I am testing Publisher 2007 and have found that I can make transparent
shadows in RGB mode (which come out transparant in PDF and also XPS)
but the option to make a shadow "semitransparent" disappears when I'm
in CMYK mode. I think I know the answer to this ("no!") but can I not
have this sort of transparency in a CMYK document?
