Send and email goes into outbox but not in italics

I am creating new emails and hitting Send. They appear in the outbox but are
not in italics so do not send. If I create a dummy email and leave it in the
outbox then the next email I create does appear in italics. However, on a
send/receive it goes into the sent items but is not really sent.
