Try reinstalling the sounds.exe from Microsoft Office Downloads - it
sometimes gets corrupted as well. You will need to uninstall when prompted
and then reinstall. It should work then. Ensure you have "Provide feedback
with sound" enabled under the Advanced tab of the Tools Options as well as a
sound defined under Control Panel, Sounds and Multimedia.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Denny asked:
| I reinstalled the Backup tool and the send/receive now work
| automatically.
| I didn't have to create a new profile. Not sure what happened, but I
| am satisfied it is working. If only I could get the sound to work
| for the mail notification. This happened right after I upgraded, but
| not a real issue just an annoyance. Thanks for your responses!

| || Sounds like your upgrade messed with your profile. Re-enable the
|| Personal Folders Backup (never had any problems with my
|| installations) and create a new profile here: Control Panel->Mail
|| Icon->Show Profiles->New. Do not copy your old profile as it may be
|| corrupt.

||
|| ||| Well, I seem to have found the culprit. I uninstalled the
||| Microsoft Backup tool and the automatic send/receive is working
||| fine. Now, I would like to know why this seems to inhibit the
||| message |||| My connection type is Comcast Cable through Ethernet. The
|||| settings for send/receive are: include this group in send and
|||| receive/F9 for both online and offline, send and receive
|||| immediately when connected, (these were working up until three
|||| days ago). The polling interval is schedule an automatic
|||| send/receive every 3 minutes for online. I am wondering if when I
|||| added the backup tool from Microsoft is this caused the problem?
|||| I had Office XP prior to installing Office 2003 and have not been
|||| able to get the new mail notification sound to work since. This
|||| seems to have been a somewhat flakey upgrade. I have Office 2003
|||| for Teachers and Students and had this with Office XP also. Any
|||| help would be appreciated. TIA! I have this installed on my
|||| wife's computer and am having no problems with it. "Milly Staples
