Send and recieve error 0x8004011

I have issues with Outlook XP, running against a Exchange 2003 server
Connecting via VPN

When VPN is active I can connect to the server and work fine, and run send
and recieve.

When VPN is active and I select wrok offline, work on mail etc then select
send recieve it will not finf the server? Any ideas on where I should look to
resolve
