Send, attach, and insert buttons are greyed out

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

When I finish typing a new email, I can't send my email or attach or insert anything because the buttons are greyed out.

I need to save it as a draft and then hit the send button.

this is really starting to be a pain.

Help?

Are you sure you have a recipient entered?

Have you tested in a new Identity? It's possible this is database
corruption. Testing in a new Identity will verify if this is the case.
